West or East Nusa Penida? Choose West for your first visit, because it has Kelingking, Broken Beach and the shortest drives. Choose East for Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach and a quieter day with more stairs. If you only have one day and want both, the Mix tour covers the top spots from each side.

Quick facts

  • West highlights: Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Crystal Bay
  • East highlights: Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, Molenteng Tree House, Teletubbies Hill
  • Busier side: usually the West, especially Kelingking in the late morning
  • Longer drive: the East, around 1 to 1.5 hours each way from the harbour
  • Both in one day: the Mix tour, with more time in the car

What is the difference between West and East Nusa Penida?

On West Nusa Penida you get the famous viewpoints, while East Nusa Penida has the best beach stairs and fewer people. Both sides offer huge cliffs and bright blue water, so neither is a bad choice.

Fast boats from Sanur land on the north-west coast. As a result, West spots sit closer to the harbour, and you spend less of the day on the road. To reach the East, you cross the island on narrow, hilly roads. That drive is slow, but it also takes you through quiet farm villages that most visitors never see.

Why pick the West side?

Pick the West if this is your first trip, or if you want the views you have seen online. It gives you the most famous spots for the least effort.

In fact, Kelingking is the reason most people come to the island. The T-Rex cliff viewpoint sits a short walk from the car park, so you do not need to hike to get the classic photo. Our Kelingking Beach guide explains the view and the steep trail below it.

Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong lie a few minutes apart on foot. Then Crystal Bay gives you a sandy beach for a swim before the boat home. In short, the West suits kids, older parents and anyone who wants a relaxed pace.

Why pick the East side?

Pick the East if you want quieter cliffs, real beach time and a sense of the island’s rural side. It also suits travellers who have already done the West.

Diamond Beach is the star, of course. Locals cut a staircase into the cliff, and the walk down takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Our Diamond Beach Nusa Penida guide covers the stairs, the swim and the best photo spots. Atuh Beach sits on the same headland, just a short walk away.

After that, you see the Molenteng Tree House high above the coast. On the way back, you stop at Teletubbies Hill, which looks green in the wet season and golden in the dry months. However, keep in mind that the stairs are hot and steep at midday, so you need fair fitness and good shoes.

Who should choose West or East Nusa Penida?

When you weigh West or East Nusa Penida, match the side to your group, not just to the photos. Here is how we usually advise our guests.

  • First visit to the island: West, for the classic views and short drives.
  • Kids, older parents or knee trouble: West, since you can skip every steep path.
  • Couples who love beaches: East, for Diamond and Atuh on calm days.
  • Fit walkers who hate crowds: East, especially outside school holidays.
  • Snorkel fans: West + Snorkeling, which adds Manta Bay by boat.
  • One day, want it all: Mix, as long as you accept shorter stops.

Ready to choose? You can book the private West Tour or the private East Tour with return fast boat, car, guide, tickets and lunch included.

Can you see both sides in one day?

Yes, you can see West and East Nusa Penida with our Mix tour, but you trade some time at each stop for more time in the car. It covers Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach.

The morning goes to the West spots. Then, after lunch, you drive east to Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. So you get the big views from both sides, but the road time grows to about three to four hours. You may not have time to walk all the way down the Diamond Beach stairs.

For many visitors with only one free day, that is a fair deal. Our Mix West + East tour starts from IDR 545,000 per person for six guests at Sanur Port, or IDR 700,000 with hotel pickup. For the full hour-by-hour plan of every route, see our one-day Nusa Penida itinerary.

West or East Nusa Penida FAQ

Is West or East Nusa Penida better for a first visit?

The West is better for most first visits. It has Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong, the views most people picture when they think of the island. The drives are also shorter, and the main viewpoints need little walking. Save the East for a second trip, or choose the Mix tour.

Which side of Nusa Penida is less crowded?

The East is usually less crowded than the West. Kelingking draws the biggest crowds on the island, often from late morning. Diamond Beach has grown popular too, but the longer drive keeps numbers lower. With a private tour, your guide can also shift the order of stops to avoid the busiest times.

Which side has better beaches for swimming?

Crystal Bay on the West is the easiest beach for a swim on most days. On the East, Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach are lovely, but waves can be strong. Only swim there when the sea is calm and your driver-guide agrees it is safe. Never swim at Kelingking Beach.
