The best Nusa Penida itinerary for a day trip from Bali picks one side of the island and does it well. Go West for Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong, or East for Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. A Mix tour covers the highlights of both, while West + Snorkeling adds Manta Bay. Below you will find hour-by-hour plans for all four.
Quick facts
- Day length: about 11–12 hours, door to door
- Hotel pickup: 06:00–07:00, depending on your area in Bali
- Fast boat: about 40 minutes each way from Sanur Port
- Back in Sanur: around 17:00–18:00
- Spots per day: 4–5 stops, plus lunch at a local restaurant
- Road time on the island: 2–4 hours, depending on the route
How does a one-day Nusa Penida itinerary work?
Every one-day Nusa Penida itinerary follows the same frame: an early start in Bali, a fast boat from Sanur, a full day by car on the island, then the boat back. Only the middle part changes, so the real choice is which spots you see.
Nusa Penida looks small on a map. However, the roads are narrow, hilly and slow, so a 20 km drive can take close to an hour. That is why a good Nusa Penida itinerary groups spots that sit close together. It also leaves enough time at each stop for photos, a swim or a slow walk, instead of a rush from car park to car park.
The boat sets the start and end of your day too. You usually land between 08:00 and 09:00, and you need to be back at the harbour by mid-afternoon. In other words, you get about seven hours on the island. For details on the crossing itself, read our guide to the Sanur to Nusa Penida fast boat.
Nusa Penida itinerary timeline at a glance
This table shows a typical Nusa Penida itinerary for each of our four private tours. Times are approximate, because boat schedules, traffic and the sea all shift a little from day to day.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 06:00–07:00 | Hotel pickup in Bali (All-in option) | |||

West Nusa Penida itinerary, hour by hour
The West route is the classic first Nusa Penida itinerary. It packs the most famous views into the shortest drives, so it suits almost everyone.

Morning: Kelingking Beach
After you land, the drive to Kelingking takes about 45 to 60 minutes. The T-Rex cliff viewpoint sits a short walk from the car park, and that view alone is worth the trip. Plan about an hour here.
The trail down to the sand is steep and rough. Most day visitors stay at the top, while fit hikers sometimes go part of the way. Our Kelingking Beach guide covers the hike and the safety tips in detail.
Late morning: Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong
Next, you drive to the north-west coast. Broken Beach is a round bay with a natural rock arch, and you can walk the cliff path all the way around it. Angel’s Billabong, a clear rock pool, sits a few minutes away on foot.
Only step into the pool when the sea is calm and your guide says so. Big waves can wash over the rocks without warning. Read more in our guide to Broken Beach Nusa Penida and Angel’s Billabong.
Afternoon: lunch and Crystal Bay
Lunch is Indonesian food at a local restaurant, and we include it in the price. Then you finish at Crystal Bay, a sandy beach with calm water on most days. It is the best place on this route for a swim, so pack swimwear and a towel. After that, your guide drives you back to the harbour for the boat.

East Nusa Penida itinerary, hour by hour
The East route has fewer crowds and more dramatic cliff stairs. So this Nusa Penida itinerary suits travellers who have seen the West before or want a quieter day.
Morning: Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach
The drive east takes around 1 to 1.5 hours, so you see a lot of village life on the way. Diamond Beach comes first. Locals cut a staircase into the cliff face, and the walk down takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Our Diamond Beach Nusa Penida guide explains the stairs and when to swim.
Atuh Beach sits on the same headland, just a short walk away. Its sheltered bay and rock island make a great second stop. Also, the stairs here are long, so take water and go slowly in the heat.
Midday: Molenteng Tree House
The Molenteng Tree House, or Rumah Pohon, perches high above the coast near Atuh. It offers one of the best photo frames on the island, with the sea and small limestone islets far below. Then you stop for lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Teletubbies Hill
On the way back, you pass Teletubbies Hill, a field of round green hills. They look greenest in the wet season and turn golden brown in the dry months. Finally, you head to the harbour for the boat home.
Our East Nusa Penida tour follows this plan, with the same private car and driver-guide all day.
Mix tour itinerary: West and East in one day
The Mix tour fits the top spots of both sides into one day. It works well when you only have one day and still want to see Kelingking and Diamond Beach.
In the morning, you see Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong. After lunch, you cross the island to Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. As a result, you spend more time in the car than on the other routes, often three to four hours in total.
So the trade-off is simple: more views, but shorter stops. You may not have time to walk all the way down the Diamond Beach stairs. If you cannot decide between the two sides, read our comparison of West or East Nusa Penida first, then book the Mix West + East tour when you want both.
West + Snorkeling itinerary, hour by hour
This Nusa Penida itinerary swaps the morning drive for a boat trip. You snorkel first, while the sea is usually calmer, then see the two big West viewpoints after lunch.
Morning: four snorkel spots
Soon after landing, you board a local boat with a boat guide. First stop is Manta Bay, where manta rays often feed close to the surface. Then you move on to Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay and Wall Bay for coral and reef fish. We provide snorkel gear and life jackets, so you do not need swimming experience.
Manta rays are wild animals, so no one can promise a sighting on a given day. Our Manta Bay snorkeling guide explains what to expect. For research and good conduct around mantas, the Manta Trust is a useful source.
Afternoon: Kelingking and Broken Beach
After lunch, your driver-guide takes you to Kelingking and then Broken Beach. Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay beach are not on the land part of this route, because the boat trip uses that time. You can book this day as our West + Snorkeling tour.
Which Nusa Penida itinerary should you choose?
Choose your Nusa Penida itinerary by what matters most to you. Each route below fits a different kind of traveller.
- First visit, limited fitness: West Tour, because the main views need little walking.
- Return visit or quieter day: East Tour, especially if you enjoy stairs and beach time.
- One day, want everything: Mix Tour, as long as you accept more time in the car.
- Love the water: West + Snorkeling, with Manta Bay as the highlight.
- Young kids or older parents: West Tour, then skip any steep paths.
Still unsure? Our Nusa Penida travel guide covers the island as a whole, from weather to what to pack.
Tips for any Nusa Penida itinerary
A few small choices make a long day much easier. Here is what we tell our own guests before they travel.
- Wear shoes with grip, such as sports sandals or trainers, because cliff paths get dusty and loose.
- Bring cash for drinks and snacks, since card machines are rare on the island.
- Take sunscreen, a hat and at least one litre of water each.
- Pack swimwear and a small towel for Crystal Bay or the snorkel boat.
- Take seasick tablets before the boat if you feel queasy at sea.
Weather matters too. When rough seas stop the fast boats, we reschedule your date or adjust the plan at no extra cost. Before you go, you can also check the forecast on the BMKG Indonesian weather agency website.
Nusa Penida itinerary FAQ
Is one day enough for Nusa Penida?
A one-day Nusa Penida itinerary is enough to see one side of the island well, or the top spots of both sides on a Mix tour. The day runs about 11 to 12 hours from hotel to hotel. If you want to see every viewpoint at a slow pace, plan two separate day trips instead.
What time should I leave Bali for a Nusa Penida day trip?
Plan to leave your hotel between 06:00 and 07:00, depending on where you stay. That gets you to Sanur Port around 07:00 for a morning fast boat. An early start matters, because it gives you more time on the island and cooler air at the cliffs.
Can I change the order of stops on a private tour?
Yes. On our private tours, your driver-guide can change the order of the stops on the day. For example, he may avoid a crowded viewpoint and come back later. The spots in your package stay the same, but the timing can bend to suit your pace and the conditions.
Can I combine snorkeling with the East side?
Our snorkel package pairs the boat trip with Kelingking and Broken Beach on the West side. The snorkel spots lie off the west and north-west coast, so the East side is too far for the same day. If you want both, consider two day trips: one West + Snorkeling and one East Tour.
