How long is the fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida?
The crossing takes about 40 minutes on a normal day. On a calm morning it can feel even quicker, while a strong swell can add a few minutes.
Several companies run fast boats from Sanur to Nusa Penida. Their timetables and fares change with the season, so we do not list them here as fixed facts. When you book a private tour with us, the return boat ticket is already part of the package. As a result, you never need to compare operators or queue for tickets.
Most day trips use an early boat. That way you reach the island before the midday heat and get a full day of sightseeing. Then you take an afternoon boat back to Sanur.
What is boarding at Sanur Port like?
Boarding is simple but a little wet. Depending on the boat and the tide, you may walk along the beach and wade out to the boat through knee-deep water.
The crew help you climb a short ladder or step at the back of the boat. They also pass bags up and down for you. So keep your hands free and hold the rail as you step in. Small waves can lift the boat while you board, especially on breezy days.
Inside, you sit on rows of seats in a covered cabin. Some boats also have open seating at the back or on the upper deck. For this reason, the boat can feel busy, but the ride is short.
What to wear and how to pack
Wear sandals or water shoes rather than sneakers, because your feet will probably get wet. Shorts or a skirt above the knee make wading easier. Also bring a light jacket, since the cabin air-con can feel cold after the warm beach.
Pack light for a day trip. A small backpack with a dry bag inside is ideal. It keeps your phone, passport copy and cash safe from splashes. If you have big suitcases, leave them at your Bali hotel, because carrying them through the water is hard work.
What happens when you arrive on Nusa Penida?
You arrive on the island’s north coast after a short wade or a step onto the shore. From there it is a short walk to the road.

Arriving from Sanur to Nusa Penida with a private tour
On our tours, your driver-guide waits near the arrival point and recognises your group. Then you walk to your private air-conditioned car and set off. We also handle the island entrance donation for you, so there is no extra payment on arrival.
If you travel on your own, arrival is busier. You will usually meet drivers offering rides and scooter rentals. In addition, Nusa Penida’s roads are steep and narrow in places. That is why many visitors prefer to have a car and local driver arranged before they land.
How to handle seasickness on the crossing
Most people feel fine on the ride from Sanur to Nusa Penida, but the boat can bounce on a windy day. If you are prone to motion sickness, plan ahead.
- Take a motion-sickness tablet before boarding, following the pack instructions.
- Eat a light breakfast and avoid greasy food.
- Choose a seat near the back, where the boat usually moves less.
- Look at the horizon instead of your phone.
- Ask the crew for a plastic bag early, just in case.
Morning seas are often calmer than the afternoon. Even so, conditions vary, and our team checks the forecast before every trip. Our guide to when to visit Nusa Penida explains how the seasons affect the sea.
